The average household generates over 100 pounds of scrap metal each year. Did you know that all of that can be recycled?

Ellie knows! She and her friends have already achieved the incredible feat of recycling a million cans, but they're not done yet. Now, they're on a mission to tackle the problem of metal items needlessly being thrown away. Determined to make a difference, they gather wires, Christmas lights, pots and pans, unicorn shoes, and other metal items from their community. Then Ellie and her classmates head to the local scrapyard to turn those treasures into valuable resources through recycling. They earn money for their school too!

We believe your kids will not only love this story but will be inspired to join in neighborhood clean-up efforts. Maybe they’ll even earn some extra cash for their piggy banks. Happy reading and recycling!

Ellie and her friends discover a problem in their neighborhood: metal is being thrown in the garbage instead of being recycled! They hold a scrap metal drive, taking their wagon home to home and collecting household items to be recycled. Featuring whimsical characters like a talking magnet, this book presents the science behind metal recycling in a fun, kid-friendly way. Young readers will enjoy the adventure to the scrapyard and will learn how they can help recycle metal too.

Jaffer, an elementary school teacher with 15 years of experience, knows how important it is to teach kids at a young age about sustainability and environmental responsibility. Brad Rudover, with over 40 years of experience in the metal recycling industry, is an expert in the field and knows the value of recycling metal. Jessica Alexanderson aka Scuba Jess, a scuba diver in Seattle, WA, is an advocate for ocean conservation and brings awareness of the impact of waste on our oceans and planet.

Together, they are Scrap U Kids, they have set a 30 year goal to eliminate metal from the landfill. They teach kids that all metals have value and that recycling them can even earn them some cash. So don't throw away those old wires, USB chargers, holiday lights, tin foil, or cans - bring them to your local scrap yard instead! They believe in making metal recycling fun and easy for kids while also raising awareness of the importance of sustainability.
