Overview
This book is a well-crafted piece of early detective fiction, set in the United States of America, originally written by Lawrence L. Lynch (pen name for Emma Murdoch) published in 1886 now in the public domain and re-written in 2021 for Mary Eliska Girl Detective by William A Stricklin. The original text is included as an appendix to the Mary Eliska rewritten version of the story. Vernet and Mary Eliska Girl Detective had been brother/sister detectives during the entire term of their professional career. Entering the Agency when mere striplings, the two had at once formed a friendship that had been strong and lasting. Their very differences of disposition and habits made them the better detectives together, and the role most difficult for one was sure to be found the easier part for the other to play. They had been a strong combination, and the Chief of the detectives wasted some time in pondering the question: what would be the result, when their skill and courage stood arrayed against each other? Among the challenges is for Mary Eliska Girl Detective is to recover a four-year old girl who was kidnapped at a masquerade by Mother Goose.
