He and his wife Anita founded GM Books in 1985—a firm specializing in quality self-publishing. Since forming the company GM Books has published over 175 titles including, Witness to War: Images of the Persian Gulf War for the Los Angeles Times that won a Pulitzer. William is the author of five books on Balkan history and music. The Nursing Home Crisis follows his 2008 publication Defeat Foreclosure.
