Dr. Robert O. Dawson, author of the first six editions of Texas Juvenile Law, held the Bryant Smith Chair in Law at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, Texas from 1990 until his death in February of 2005. Dr. Dawson was an eminent law professor, prosecutor, and public defender who is best known as the principal drafter of Title 3 of the Texas Family Code. He served for many years as advisor to the Juvenile Justice and Family Issues Committee of the Texas House of Representatives and a variety of other committees on issues related to juvenile justice and criminal justice legislation. He wrote several books and articles on criminal procedure and co-authored a six-volume treatise Texas Criminal Practice and Procedure (Second Edition, West 2001). Throughout his career, he lectured extensively on juvenile law. The 9th Edition was updated by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department Office of the General Counsel. Principal Contributors: Nydia D.
