Start from Strength

Recovery Experience Guide: Participant Edition

By Jason Roop, Ph.D.

Overview

Recovery asks people to change their lives, but too often begins by telling them what is wrong. Start from Strength begins somewhere else: with the traits, capacities, and identity that survived. Across forty lessons, Jason Roop guides readers through resilience, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, authenticity, relationships, balance, purpose, and contribution. Grounded in research and lived experience, this participant guide helps people understand behavior without becoming defined by it, recognize strength under pressure, and build a life directed by choice rather than shame.

Description

Recovery asks a great deal of people. It asks for honesty, responsibility, change, and the courage to face what happened. It should not also require a person to erase everything good about themselves before beginning again. Start from Strength: Recovery Experience Guide, Participant Edition presents the Trait-Based Model through forty connected lessons. Rather than reducing a person to addiction, diagnosis, failure, or behavior, the guide helps readers recognize the human capacities that remained present through struggle and learn how those capacities operate under pressure. Jason Roop, Ph.D., developed the model from lived experience, doctoral research, and years of implementation across treatment, recovery, education, healthcare, justice, and community settings. The lessons explore resilience, determination, self-awareness, creativity, authenticity, emotional intelligence, empathy, appreciation, motivation, relationships, leadership, balance, purpose, and contribution. Readers learn to examine behavior honestly without mistaking it for identity, understand the difference between a trait and its expression, recognize shadow patterns, and make more deliberate choices about how their strengths will be directed. The experience includes reflection prompts, growth checkpoints, assessment access, mindfulness and recovery practices, and opportunities to connect insight with everyday life. It can support facilitated groups, organizational programs, or individual reflection without prescribing one universal pathway to recovery. This is not a promise that the past disappears or that growth becomes effortless. It is an invitation to tell a fuller truth. Accountability matters. Harm matters. So do the strengths, relationships, decisions, and capacities that make repair and transformation possible. The person has been there all along.

About The Author

Jason Roop, Ph.D., created the Trait-Based Model and founded The Center for Trait-Based Transformation to help people and organizations begin with what is already strong. His work brings together behavioral science, lived experience, identity development, recovery, prevention, leadership, and human development. He developed the Trait-Based Model, now applied across treatment, recovery, prevention, education, healthcare, justice, and leadership settings. His research has been published in Scientific Reports, where the model was examined in relation to engagement, anxiety, depression, resilience, and trait development. Jason's professional work is inseparable from lived experience. After seventeen years of active addiction and periods of homelessness, he entered long-term recovery in 2013. He later earned a Ph.D. in Business Management and Leadership by pursuing the question that became the model's foundation: Do people with substance-use disorders share characteristics with highly effective leaders? The research identified recurring human capacities that could be recognized, balanced, and redirected rather than erased. Today, Jason works with treatment organizations, schools, justice initiatives, community partners, and leaders seeking practical ways to build human development around identity and strength. His work emphasizes implementation, measurable outcomes, responsible influence, and the conviction beneath this guide: the person has been there all along.
