A POWWOW SUMMER ACROOS AMERICA is a study which explores the intercultural identity and roll of powwows as a cornerstone of an American Indian way of life in North America. This study utilizes data collection techniques such as field notes including a journal; participant observation; and informal and unstructured interviews. This study captures the understandings of the participants through a collection and analysis of artifacts (photographs) as a means of conveying the story. This study establishes Indian identity within the contemporary powwow, allowing native voices to be heard.
Dr. Lita Mathews is a Native American from Northern New Mexico who has spent the majority of her life involved in Native culture. For nearly thirty years she has participated in Native American Powwows as a northern style traditional dancer. It is the lifestyle and adventure which she shares with the reader. Thus providing an insider's view to a modern day native activity. Dr. Lita Mathews received her PhD from the University of New Mexico in 1999. This book highlights her dissertation work. Dr. Lita Mathews and her family are the founders and producers of the annual Gathering of Nations Pow Wow, which is held in Albuquerque New Mexico. The Gathering of Nations Pow Wow is North America's biggest powwow.
