by Margo Lopez

Overview
This biography is about a family who left the security and comfort of their home in Mexico to find a new destiny in the land of opportunity, where people are free to hope and make their own way. It's the story of a hard-working family who came together and broke all stereotypes, overcame all obstacles, and forged forward to better their lives. Life in a foreign country with a different language and culture, and without the support of an extended family would become a challenge, but it also offered an opportunity to leave old conventions behind and create your own. We came to the United States of America at a time when soldiers had just returned from World War II, eager to begin a new life and have families. This is a story about the 50s, 60s, and 70s, where technological inventions introduced a myriad of household products and appliances that gave everyone free time to experience life and enjoy their free time. It is also the story of our brave ancestors who took a tremendous risk by sailing across the Atlantic Ocean into a world they had just learned existed, with the same spirit of excitement and hope for a new beginning. Part of my heritage comes from my American forefathers whose genetic markers added to our own pool of genes, making us stronger and able to shape our future, as well as improve our lives and our societies in significant ways.

About the author
Margo Lopez attended San Diego State University and received a Master's in Education with emphasis in curriculum and instruction. She taught at Wilson Academy, grades 7th and 8th, and at Monroe Clark Middle for 20 years. She was Adjunct Professor at the San Diego Community Colleges, where she taught ESL to adult students for several years. Margo raised two daughters as a single parent while working full-time and going to college full-time during her first year at SDSU. She is a grandmother of six young adults just starting their lives, and a great-grandson. Three of the six Lopez siblings graduated from college, and three had successful careers, which makes this an exceptional family as only a small percentage of Hispanics in this country graduate from college. Margo chose to teach because she wanted to make a difference in her students' lives and inspire them to be more than ordinary, she taught them to be critical thinkers and future leaders.
