Carol Henson is a former wildland firefighter, fire consultant, and author specializing in the history and experiences of women in wildland firefighting. She spent nearly thirty years with the U.S. Forest Service in operational and leadership roles, followed by a decade working as a wildland fire consultant.
Her first book, The Fire Within: A History of Women Wildland Firefighters in the United States, documented the overlooked history of women on the fireline. Her second book, The Fire Chronicles: Stories from Women Wildland Firefighters, builds on that work through first-person stories from women who served on handcrews, hotshot crews, engine crews, helitack crews, smokejumpers, fire pilots, fire dispatch, fire prevention, fuels management, fire lookouts, and leadership roles throughout the United States.
Through her writing, Henson preserves the voices, experiences, and legacy of women who helped shape wildland firefighting history.
