About The Author
James W. Story
Author · Composer · Conductor · Educator · Cultural Historian
James W. Story is an American author, composer, conductor, educator, and cultural historian whose life's work stands at the intersection of faith, music, ancestry, and community memory. With a career spanning more than four decades, Story has devoted himself to preserving African American sacred traditions, advancing arts education, and shaping generations of musicians, readers, and leaders.
Equally at home in the classroom, the choir loft, the concert hall, and the written page, Story's creative voice reflects a deep belief that story and song are vessels of survival, testimony, and hope. His work honors ancestral wisdom while calling future generations to listen deeply—to history, to faith, and to the quiet voice of the spirit.
In recognition of his cultural leadership and service, James W. Story was named Gallatin Citizen of the Year (2020).
