About The Author

I AM GROOT! No, not that Groot—I’m Michelle Groot, also known as Shelly, Auntie Shelly, Mom, and Mrs. Michelle. I became an author because I wanted to turn my nephew into a goblin—but not just any goblin!

At age five, Ryan survived Wilms tumor, a rare kidney cancer that required major surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. In the years that followed, he grew into an exceptional young man. Then, at 22, the cancer returned. Ryan was diagnosed with a very rare form of stage 4 metastatic melanoma. More than once, he survived a hemoglobin level of 2 (a level of 7 or below is life-threatening). He jokingly called himself “The Hemo-Goblin.”

Blood transfusions gave Ryan more time. Although he has since passed away, his caring nature and the lives he touched continue to inspire us. In his memory, we have helped save countless lives, one blood drive at a time.

My first book, Ryen Ryen the Hemogoblin, was released four years ago and is available in hardcover. Written for children and adults alike, it tells the story of a kind goblin and loyal friend who is cherished by everyone he meets. The book reminds children that even when they are hurt, sick, or scared, they each have their own superpowers.

My new e-book, When I Am Afraid, I Can Do Scary Things Anyway, is written for children ages 0–7 and is currently available only as an e-book. Inspired by Ryan’s real-life journey, this story reminds us that being brave doesn’t mean never feeling afraid—it means choosing to move forward anyway. Even small acts of courage can make a big difference in the lives of others.

If you’re feeling afraid and don’t know what to do, I hope you’ll read this story. You are never alone in your fear. You can be afraid and brave at the very same time.
