What Do I Do Well

The story of a little girl's first day of second grade. To learn a little about each other, the teacher asks each student to share one thing they do well. The main character, Kayah, goes through a series of ideas before coming up with one thing to share with her new classmates. The surprise ending will warm your heart.

This warm-hearted story begins with the common occurrence and easily relatable first day of school. Kayah, the main character, is beginning second grade. Like in many classrooms, the first day includes "getting to know you" activities. Kayah must assess her own abilities and come up with one thing she does well. This will be the first thing her new classmates learn about her. As she thinks back over events from her life, we find out a lot about how Kayah relates to her younger sister. We also get a feel for the wide range of career choices Kayah may investigate for her future. A perfect blend of the familiar and the unexpected, make this a delightful read. Patricia Franklin, is an American singer, songwriter, author, and Nationally Board Certified Special Educator. Franklin has taught kindergarten to ninth grades and began writing to personalize lessons for her students. She is the grandmother of four beautiful girls who are the inspiration for many of her stories. Patricia Franklin is listed on the Wall of Tolerance at the Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery, Alabama, honoring those leading the way toward tolerance and justice in America. Franklin has also represented the United States as an educational specialist in Japan and India as part of the Fulbright Teacher program and the Center for International Understanding, respectively.
