Overview

Wellness and Holistic Physical Therapy, 3rd edition is 'the' textbook for DPT programs to incorporate into their curriculum to ensure their students meet the wellness-related of CAPTE, APTA's Normative Model of Professional Physical Therapist Education, and APTA's Minimum Skills of Entry-Level Physical Therapist Graduates, and are thus perfectly prepared to provide holistic physical therapy to maximize patient outcomes. To accomplish these goals, it incorporates APTA Guide's 3.0, healthy People's Leading Health Indicators, and up to the minute evidence-based information (over 1200 references).

Chapters 1 and 2 introduce wellness as a component of the Physical Therapist Scope of Practice, examines and applies the Model of Holistic Physical Therapy (MHPT), and provides an array of patient case scenarios.

In Chapter 3, APTA's Patient/Client Management Model is enhanced with holistic tools such as the Stages of Wellness, Brief Teach, Guided Exploration, and Motivational Education.

Chapters 4 and 5 focus on the PT Scope of Nutrition Practice and provide the basics of nutrition followed by a comparison of a variety of diets to the whole-food, plant-based diet.

Important comorbidities with which physical therapy patients present are explored in various chapters. For instance, Chapter 6 discusses the comorbidity obesity and Chapter 7 examines mental illness comorbidities.

Chapter 8 highlights 'Special Topics,' including sex and LGB cultural competence, pelvic health and wellness, African-Americans and wellness, self-wellness of physical therapists, and more!

Chapter 9 explores patient self-medication including the use of tobacco/nicotine products and cessation.

Chapter 10 examines the role medications, herbals (including medical marijuana and CBD), and supplements play in the provision of physical therapy.

Chapters 11 and 12 explore complementary body-based interventions (e.g., acupuncture including dry needling, acupressure, cupping) and complementary mind-body interventions (e.g., meditation, Qi gong, Tai Chi, yoga), respectively.

Chapter 13 is dedicated to holistic physical therapy case scenarios, which can be used for small group assignments.

Chapter 14 focuses on community wellness, and includes several types of community wellness projects.

Chapter 15 (Virtual Physical Therapy) introduces telehealth and provides instructions for student creation of a 'holistic physical therapy website.'

Woven throughout the textbook are case scenarios, images of mock patient, and lots of color to engage the reader and enhance the learning experience.
