The Pragmatic Entrepreneur

Build, Scale, and Sell Your Tech Services Business

By Michael A. Brown

Overview

Ever wanted to start your own technology services company but weren't sure where to begin? What about building it - and eventually selling it - to a strategic or financial buyer? In The Pragmatic Entrepreneur, founder and author Michael A. Brown draws on two decades of experience to offer a clear, practical roadmap for building, scaling, and running a successful business. He walks you through each stage of a company's lifecycle, from startup to exit, while exploring the psychological realities of entrepreneurship - what it truly means to build something from the ground up, and how to sell it without losing yourself in the process. Whether you're launching your first venture, or preparing for growth and acquisition, The Pragmatic Entrepreneur is your guide through every step of the journey.

Description

Have you ever thought about starting a technology services business but felt unsure where to start? What about growing, scaling, and eventually selling it? Maybe you're involved in sales or have a technical background with a focus on a specific application or tool you can resell. Either way, the process of building, growing, and selling a company takes years, not days or months, and many universities don't teach this well. The ideas and philosophies around starting, scaling, and selling a services based company are often closely guarded secrets by business owners. Over the past 15 years, I have dedicated most of my time to founding and growing my own companies across various industries. I also worked with investment bankers and private equity (PE) firms as a mergers and acquisitions (M&A) consultant, helping them make acquisition decisions. Through these experiences, I have seen how many businesses – especially in technology services and Software as a Service (SaaS) – either successfully organize and execute their models or fail to succeed and eventually disappear. Building on this experience, I authored 'The Pragmatic Entrepreneur,' a book about self-aware entrepreneurship. I aimed to showcase the successes and failures of companies, along with my own personal experiences – what I did well and what could have been improved. The processes and advice I shared in this book are described as pragmatic because I provided practical tools and insights that readers can implement immediately. This illustrated how different decisions made during business growth can realistically impact you, your co-founders, employees, and even your personal life.
