Overview
For seventeen-year-old Drew Genetti, it is an intense summer -- talking to his first ghost, exploring his first cave, fighting for his life.
Description
Seventeen-year-old Drew Genetti feels like he’s in a cheesy TV show. His grandma couldn’t have shot his grandpa, could she? Yet, minutes after the murder, Drew saw the ghost of his grandpa. He showed Drew his gaping, bloody head wound and commanded, “Don’t believe anything your grandma tells you.” What Drew’s grandma tells him is this: in 1899, on his grandparents’ farm, a doomsday cult converted all their worldly possessions to gold and disappeared into a secret sinkhole. In the cave beyond, they awaited the End of Days. They were never seen again, but since then eerie globes of light have haunted the Starkweather farm — the trapped souls of the cult, according to Drew’s grandma. She says that Drew’s grandpa found the sinkhole and the gold and tried to kill her so that she couldn’t tell anyone. Is it possible that his grandpa found a place hidden for over a hundred years? Without proof, no one believes his grandma’s claim of self-defense. To keep her out of prison, Drew must find the sinkhole and enter its forbidding maw. Can he trust the flirtatious neighbor girl and her jock boyfriend to help him explore the cave safely? They seem to be looking for the gold themselves. What will they find? Did the cult perish there with their treasure, or did they create an underground Utopia, or…? As the ghost of his grandpa warns, “There’s nothing but evil in caves.”
