Overview

A lonely teenager is plagued by nightmares about his father—dreams that ultimately lead him deep into the desert of the American Southwest on a quest to discover his father's fate.

Description
Seven years ago, Matthew Wilkes's father disappeared without a trace on an anthropological expedition in the American Southwest. Now, seven years later, lonely fifteen-year-old Matt is plagued by nightmares about his dad. But are they just bad dreams? Or are they something more? Accompanied by his best friend, Monica, Matt embarks on a quest to learn his father's fate. Moving from a sleepy Midwestern suburb to the Hopi mesas of Arizona, and from the Australian Outback to the offices of the CIA, The Dream Catcher is a story about a boy's love for his father, a childhood friendship blossoming into love, and the trust we all need to find—in friends, in family, and ultimately in ourselves. When an old Hopi guide takes the two teens on a trek into the Arizona desert, Matthew will discover a secret that's been kept for a thousand years and face a moment of truth that will determine the destiny of the world.

Really enjoyable book! I loved the way The Dream Catcher unfolded and the way the characters developed along the way. Matt refused to let the adults in his life hold him back from searching for his missing father even though his nightmares warned him of danger. The story was really well paced, and the writing reminded me of Michael Grant’s BZRK series. Like Grant, Gregory Baird sometimes uses other forms of exposition besides straight narrative to tell the story. I’d recommend this book for teenagers and adults. Read more
