Overview

The Coach & The Kids is a story based on the true-life experiences of a first-year elementary physical education teacher. Scripted to unfold as a 4 act play, the various scenes capture specific moments in the life and times of a young and inexperienced educator. The year is 1978 and the setting is Raleigh, North Carolina. I had just graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with an MAT degree. I applied to every school district possible looking for a job. No luck. Finally a school district took a chance on me.

Compliments to the Cook...

Dr. Robert Pangrazi writes: "I believe this is a must read. A real life story that is folksy, filled with wisdom and subtle advice. Read it and grow."

Dr. Karen Garmon writes: "Every physical educator has a story about how it all began. This is Artie Kamiya's story. He shares the mishaps, the great days and just how much impact our relationships have in this profession."

Lori Dunn writes: "It is not often that a book is written with a physical education teacher as the protagonist. In other words, as the hero or heroine or main character. There is an awesome goodness in what we do. And so it is with this book."

Description
For Uncountable Years, I have always thought about writing a book that had a physical education teacher as the protagonist - the hero. However, I really didn't know where to start. After all, I'm just a physical education teacher.

And While I was very comfortable writing K-12 games, sharing teaching tips and/or assisting others to publish their books; that was not going to be the case in writing a book like this.

So, I didn't.

I Just Kept on Writing activity books, presenting workshops, keynoting and/or starting stuff that grassroots PE teachers might enjoy and use. Like the How to be an Outstanding Physical Education Teacher book. In this book, over 30 physical education teachers from across the United States shared their wisdom through stories of every day teaching.

And When it was published 3 years ago, I started to think about what I could do next. But my inspirational muse was silent. Or sleeping. Or perhaps decided to take a nice vacation. In any case, I just waited. And waited.

Then a Friend asked me if I'd like to be the new Executive Director for our state association - NC SHAPE. I said "maybe." A few months later, I was hired. It was during one of my first NC SHAPE State Conventions, that I was told by another friend - "Artie, you should write a book about yourself." Well, I pushed that thought aside. You see, my inspirational writing muse had not returned.

However on my 72nd birthday (11/28/2022), she re-appeared. And so with a burst of new-found energy, I wrote the first draft of this book in about a month. Over 200 pages. Then she quickly left.

With little energy to edit, revise and re-think the entire manuscript; I was floundering again. As my 73rd birthday approached, I thought perhaps I should finish the book. And perhaps, since I am in my twilight years - this may be the only opportunity to get it done.

So, here it is! A fictional work based on my first year as an elementary physical education teacher.

I hope you enjoy it!
