Being a caregiver is one of the hardest yet most rewarding experiences in life. Nothing shows love like caring for a loved one in their time of need. Troy Donahue Jackson gives up his corporate career as a marketing analyst to become a full-time caregiver for his mother, Gloria Jackson. In The Caregiver, he shares his experiences alongside the challenges he faces. He has been taking care of his mother since twelfth grade when his father passed away. She suffers from heart failure, respiratory failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), poor circulation, high blood pressure, diabetes, lymphedema, and neuropathy with mobility issues. The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic complicated matters further, as did Hurricane Ida when Troy and his mother had to manage without electricity for two weeks.
The Caregiver is the heartfelt true story of a man's love for his mother and how they overcome the enormous odds life throws their way. Troy Donahue Jackson gives an unflinching account of the struggles he has to navigate while taking care of his mother. This is a book about love, compassion, and kindness toward one's loved ones. Jackson's writing is clear, concise, and, above all, accessible. Anyone who has ever had to be a caregiver should read this book. Jackson's story makes you feel for those who have to rely on strangers to take care of them as they age. I found the book to be an illuminating read and I can't recommend it highly enough.
