ABOUT THE AUTHORS, THE ILLUSTRATOR, AND THE MUSICAL DIRECTOR

Written By ELLEN SMITH and MAUREEN HOLMES BROWN, The Backyard Boys is their first collaboration in children's fiction.

Ellen, a retired teacher of 18 years, knew from an early age that her life was destined to revolve around children. Education was both her passion and her calling.

Maureen, a Michigander at heart, is a retired film professional and independent filmmaker. She harbors a lifelong love of movies, storytelling and entertainment.

They both embrace a rich family life and a deep, enduring love of nature.

Illustrated by ELENA SANCHEZ, a new young artist, The Backyard Boys marks her debut in children's literature.

Growing up in Borrego Springs, California, Elena said she learned independence and resilience in an environment of open skies and peaceful nights. She continues, "My creativity and sense of self were shaped by those formative years. I always used art as a means of storytelling and as a way to bring imagination to life. This creative adventure, The Backyard Boys, marks a thrilling new phase in my life."

MICHAEL YANOSKA, our musical director, has recorded a fun song to accompany the book. The song is called "Clap Clap Turn Around" and was written by Maureen Holmes Brown and produced by Michael. To check out the song and learn more about our book, visit our website, Backyardboysbook.com

Overview

OH WHAT FUN!   In Book 1 you'll meet Steven and Dillon, two spirited brothers, whose adventures unfold in the magical world of their Grandma Mimi's backyard.

With curiosity and laughter as their guide, the boys discover the joys of nature, experience the delight of cookies fresh from Grandma Mimi's oven, give a backyard bird the perfect nickname, Bandit, and puzzle over the mystery of a strange rock that even Grandma Mimi doesn't know about.

Along the way, the book teaches children the value of patience, friendship, imagination, love of nature, and even the beginnings of becoming young Birders.

Written in five short parts, the book is perfect for reading aloud at bedtime over five nights, or for young independent readers ready to enjoy a story on their own.

The lively colorful illustrations by Elena Sanchez bring Grandma Mimi's yard and its many surprises to life, while touches of humor and magic make ever page unforgettable.

Description

Welcome to The Backyard Boys, an enchanting new children's book series.

"A warm, funny, and genuinely educational read-aloud for the whole family. ... At its heart, this is a story about a grandmother, her two grandsons, and a family of Townsend's warblers that moves into the backyard tree - but it's really a story about patience, wonder, and the quiet magic of paying attention to the world around you. ...  For teachers, parents and caregivers, it's an invitation to slow down, look up into the trees together, and start conversations about nature, family, and growing at your own pace. ... The activity pages at the back - color hunts, bird-watching checklists, word searches - extend the fun well past the last page and make it a book families will return to again and again. ... The Backyard Boys captures something rare ... I can't wait for Book 2."
