Overview
Tears, Cheers and Jeers is about deceit. Deceit that is innocent, deceit that is sinister, deceit that causes mayhem and deceit that may not be deceit at all, except as it deceives the reader.
"Bear" Enis, a world renowned expert in religious rituals is disillusioned with academia. He, with his wife Kezia, a Romanian gypsy, and his graduate assistant, Vasily, the wastrel son of Vladimir Putin's "fixer," embark on a new business venture of supplying crowds for events to which no one would go …without being paid. Surviving numerous mishaps, Tears, Inc.'s initial projects of funerals featuring wailers, mourners, sobbers and mutes are generally successful. Yet, the business was teetering on the edge of insolvency when a soon-to-be widow asks Bear to stage a funeral that will remake the reputation of her nationally reviled and soon-to-be deceased husband. Lured by the promise of a huge payday, Bear accepts the project. Stepping across the ethical line, Bear begins to weave a tangled web of deceit. The funeral sparks investigations seeking to unmask the fraud. When bodies of people associated with the funeral begin to appear, the fraud investigations become investigations into multiple homicides. Not dissuaded by the suspicion and confusion engulfing them, Bear and Kezia agree to provide a crowd for a wealthy, handsome, and charismatic ultra-progressive's run for the Presidency. Bear and Kezia launch the campaign with a crowd of hundreds of screaming "supporters." The candidate's campaign quickly gains momentum, until disruptors at his rallies cause mayhem and fear. When Bear and Kezia discover that Vasily supplied the disruptors, they threaten to expose him to the police. Angered, Vasily's father decides to fix the problem the only way he knows how. He sends a squad of assassins to kill Bear and Kezia. Only Vladimir Putin can stop the killers. But, will he and, if he does, why?
