Start from Strength: The Path and Purpose Workbook

By Jason Roop

Overview

The Path and Purpose Workbook helps 10th grade students explore who they are, what they value, and how to align their decisions with their deeper sense of purpose. Rooted in the Trait-Based Model of Prevention, this interactive guide supports students in developing traits like resilience, emotional intelligence, creativity, and authenticity — while also navigating real-world challenges around identity, relationships, stress, and leadership. Through reflection, journaling, and guided lessons, students learn that their traits aren't fixed — they're tools. Tools for growing, for becoming, and for building a life that feels honest and meaningful. Whether used in schools, youth programs, or one-on-one settings, this workbook invites students to slow down, reflect, and take ownership of the path ahead.

Description

The Path and Purpose Workbook is a 30-lesson journey of identity, vision, and values for 10th grade students navigating a critical season of personal growth. Rooted in the Trait-Based Model of Prevention, this interactive guide helps students explore not just who they are — but who they are becoming. Through stories, creative exercises, journaling, and conversation-based activities, students are invited to clarify their values, strengthen their traits, and align their everyday choices with a deeper sense of direction. Each lesson is structured to develop essential social-emotional skills such as resilience, emotional intelligence, creativity, authenticity, and decision-making. But beyond skill-building, this workbook offers a safe space to reflect on real-life challenges — from stress and peer pressure to identity and future planning — in a way that builds confidence and purpose from within. Students will revisit their Hero archetype (Ruler, Champion, Enchanter, or Lover) and learn how to apply it in daily life. They'll explore the Tree of Traits as a tool for problem-solving and emotional balance. They'll also complete QR-linked assessments that allow them to track their growth over time — mentally, emotionally, and behaviorally. The Path and Purpose Workbook aligns with the CASEL framework for social-emotional learning, emphasizing self-awareness, responsible decision-making, and personal development. It is ideal for integration into school-based prevention programs, advisory periods, character education classes, or one-on-one mentoring sessions. Educators and program leaders are encouraged to use this workbook as part of a sequenced Trait-Based journey — following the 9th grade Roots of Resilience workbook, and preceding the 11th grade workbook focused on identity and leadership. Whether used in schools, prevention programs, or small group settings, The Path and Purpose Workbook is more than a curriculum — it's a transformational experience that empowers youth to lead themselves well. And if you're a student holding this book in your hands: You don't have to have it all figured out. But you do have the strength, the insight, and the traits to take your next step — with purpose.

About The Author

Dr. Jason Roop is the founder and CEO of the Center for Trait-Based Transformation and the creator of the Trait-Based Model of Prevention and Recovery. With a background in behavioral science, leadership development, and addiction recovery, Dr. Roop has dedicated his life to helping people grow from their strengths rather than be defined by their struggles. A person in long-term recovery himself, Dr. Roop has spent more than a decade building systems that restore dignity, ignite purpose, and heal individuals from the inside out. His Trait-Based Model has been implemented in schools, recovery centers, outpatient programs, court systems, and community initiatives across the country, and is known for integrating identity development, character traits, and emotional intelligence into transformational care. Dr. Roop holds a Ph.D. in Leadership with a concentration in behavioral health, and he has served as a university professor, keynote speaker, curriculum developer, and national presenter on recovery, youth development, and psychosocial resilience. His work bridges evidence-based psychology with spiritual integration, offering young people a path that is both structured and soulful. In each workbook he creates, Dr. Roop aims to give students more than just information — he offers them tools to listen to their own lives, strengthen their values, and walk into the future with clarity and courage. He lives in central Kentucky, where he leads the growing Trait-Based movement alongside his wife Amanda Jo, co-creator and lead facilitator of the program. Together, they are working to transform the way we think about healing, purpose, and human potential — one trait at a time.
