Overview
During the early years of the Civil War, fifteen-year-old Sid, her younger brother and her Pa leave Missouri with a wagon train on their way to the Colorado Territory. Sid does not want to leave her mother's grave, but Pa says they must go help his brother, who has a broken leg, and they need to get away from the war before he is conscripted to fight. Along the way they find an abandoned girl, Sid delivers a stillborn colt, and a dying woman's baby. Indians attack the wagon train, and horse thieves try to steal their animals. The struggles continue after they reach the ranch, but Sid, a tomboy with a take charge attitude, can ride, shoot and handle almost any problem that comes her way. The family files on homesteads as Sid fights her inner fears and her love for one of the young men she helped to survive the harsh western life.

Sid and the Orphans Review Rating: 5 Stars Reviewed By K.C. Finn for Readers’ Favorite Sid and the Orphans is a work of fiction in the historical, coming of age, and realistic drama sub-genres. Set during the early years of the American Civil War, our protagonist is fifteen-year-old Sid. Forced to grow up fast by the untimely death of her mother, Sid is a highly capable young woman skilled in many of the traditionally female arts of the time, but who can also shoot and ride with the best of them. Her myriad of skills makes her indispensable on the journey to Colorado Territory, which brings many hardships and unexpected discoveries along the way. Author Nancy Glenn Powell has crafted a highly engaging tale with so many different facets, and one which rockets through many different action scenes to deliver its fully rounded coming of age plotline. One of the highlights, as one might expect from such a story, is the character Sid, who holds the tale together with her toughness and amazing capabilities for one so young. Yet the author balances her out realistically against her age and position at the time, giving us an incredible tale of a young woman bearing burdens but also thriving despite such hard times. The atmosphere of the piece is also fantastically built, giving us a traveling vista of the early Civil War period as tensions heat up. Overall, I would highly recommend Sid and the Orphans for all readers who enjoy historical fiction and gritty heroes who put up against the odds. Read more
