Description

"The Doctor's Luck" is a Christian based historical fiction novel. Doctor Tom begins his practice during the Great Depression in a rural Arkansas community. He has plans for a good life until he cannot pay his bills because patients are paying with vegetables and chickens, and a man abandons Betty, a fourteen-year-old pregnant girl in the doctor's tree swing; the girl has the mind of a three-year-old. The orphanage is full and he is left with a giant baby needing a bath, constant care, parental love, and discipline. Rita, the doctor's housekeeper steps in to help with Betty, but the girl tries everyone's patience. After Betty rips her doll into small pieces, the doctor and Rita worry about how they will keep the girl's unborn twins safe from her tantrums.

Rita's husband, Luke, deserted her and his two young boys, but returns after two years to cause problems. Luke tries to kill Rita, steals her property, and abducts one of their sons and sells him to a slave camp. This book contains mystery, suspense, and romance. It also shows kindness and compassion from those who, it seems, have very little to give.

The Doctors Luck Review Rating: 5 Stars Reviewed By Peggy Jo Wipf for Readers’ Favorite The Doctor’s Luck by Nancy Glenn Powell takes you back to 1930 when America was still recovering from the Great Depression and life was hard for the average American. Doctor Tom just bought a practice in a small town and hopes he will have good luck and succeed. When his patients only pay with produce from their farms, Doctor Tom finds he has plenty to eat, but no money to pay his bills. Rita, Doctor Tom’s assistant, does all she can for him, but she has two young boys that require her guidance. Doctor Tom almost reaches his breaking point when a pregnant, brain-damaged girl is abandoned in his yard. Rita does all she can for Tom and Betty Ann, but she is facing her own turmoil over her husband reappearing after leaving her years ago. With a faith-based theme, Nancy Glenn Powell portrays a family that faced incredible hardships, only to realize their biggest distresses became their largest blessings. The Doctor’s Luck reveals the quaint charm of a simpler life and the historical suffering of people during a nationwide crisis. Under distress and poverty, the true nature of people comes out. I felt the mood shift from compassion and anxiety as Doctor Tom and Rita cared for Betty Ann to danger and caution when Rita’s husband came back. I felt there were many powerful lessons woven within the story. The author shows how an entire community can come together when one person, or couple, serves unselfishly. Also, no matter who your parents are, you can be a good person, a hard worker, or compassionate. Read more
