Precise American Writing

This text offers basic suggestions and examples to guide one towards successful academic writing. The impetus for creating this book began as various writing handouts for international students and visiting scholars. They urged me to publish this book since it was so useful to them. In fact, these students also critiqued the material as they worked through the pages during our classes. Initially, each section presents an explanation for the topic introduced; followed by examples; practical exercises using the target writing lesson; and concluding with a final written sample. Therefore, this text may also be utilized as a workbook. The section topics were selected by consensus of importance by my students. Notably, students from every corner of the world have contributed to this book. Plus, diverse fields of study have been taken into consideration, such as nursing, additional health fields, engineering, computer science, accounting, business, communications, economics, and political science, just to name more than a few.

This work not only is a valuable and practical educational resource, but it will also encourage American universities and colleges to pay greater attention to the writing styles of this diverse group of students. Audrey Zenner is an instructor at the University of Illinois at Chicago where she teaches the international graduate students English academic writing. She has been teaching English to internationals for approximately 40 years and loves her job! Her interest in teaching second language learners stems from her own experiences of studying two languages at the same time (Spanish and German) from the age of twelve through college. She expanded on these studies by delving into Linguistics/TESOL at the graduate level. Her travels and teaching in other countries have awarded her with a sincere appreciation of the varied languages, customs, and cultures throughout our world.
