Description
Captain Basil's story begins on a steamboat heading to the North Pole. She's closed-off and her crew is not very fond of her. As they face the inhospitable and unforgiving nature of the arctic, something unexpected happens. The captain meets an excitable young girl, Jelly, and they start to talk. This young girl manages to break the captain's icy exterior and helps her open up about her past and future, sharing their dreams and experiences, and so the captain starts to grow. By the end of the story they have a bubbling friendship, and even the captain's relationship with the crew has improved. However, near the end of the story, terror strikes, as the captain is made to face who she is and who she wants to be.
Experience this thrilling expedition of courage and kindness, and see how it portrays being the first woman captain of her world, about how being vulnerable with others doesn't make her weak, and about how the fear of failure affects her and those around her. The novel uses lighting and a simple color scheme to not only convey the emotions of the characters, but also to show the cold nature of the North Pole.
