Lately Lesbian is Jenna’s story and I know it well because it is my true story. I lived the minutes, days and years of her life. For 33 years I wore the mask of a happily married woman, and in doing so, nearly sacrificed myself.

My story is a love story like so many others and unlike so many others. As a young woman, I wanted a loving husband, children, and a home. I wanted what my parents had.

Jenna will walk you down the path of my life and the events leading up to my marriage-ending affair. Through her eyes you will experience my secret desires and worst fears. Simmons was chosen as a finalist in the 2019 American Book Fest Awards in the LGBTQ Nonfiction category for her memoir, Lately Lesbian. Also, in February 2020, the Wishing Shelf Awards, out of the United Kingdom, recognized Lately Lesbian as a finalist in their adult nonfiction category. Most recently in October 2020, Lately Lesbian received national recognition as a winner through the New York City Big Book Awards in the category of LGTBQIA (nonfiction).

An aspiring author for most of her adult life, J. D. never dreamed her first book would be about her own life and long marriage. From an early age, J.D. desired to become a teacher and spent a lengthy career as an educator. She is passionate about spending time with her family, working in her yard, and running. J.D. resides in South Carolina where you can find her sipping a margarita and dreaming of going to the beach with her partner.

Mark 		Lately Lesbian This is quite a story. It is written quite well and real people are in this book. Penned in first person point of view, appropriate for a memoir, it recounts the struggle the author endured to find a person who would love and cherish her for who she is. This is one of the deepest needs of the human spirit, it is something we all want. The author does a wonderful job of setting the scene for the events in the story. The dialogue rings with authenticity. She includes enough action to keep the story moving forward. It kept a good pace for me. I award 4.8 stars to “Lately Lesbian”, the score would have been higher except for the small handful of spelling errors. Read more

Mandy 		Lately Lesbian A really good and easy read. Relatable to many people not just the gay/lesbian community. Experienced the full gambit of emotions with this book. True sadness and tears when Jenna tells the story of losing her first born. Hysterical laughter while reading stories about Jenna’s parents-her dad in particular. Understanding and compassion for Jenna as she peels back some very sensitive layers and reveals her disappointments with marriage and the guilt of an affair. I cried with her and for her as she struggled to rebuild and regain relationships with her adult children. I celebrated with her as she realizes that true love isn’t gender specific and can be found in the most unlikely of places. Read more
