Overview

Many years ago Intrepid began life in the redwood forests of what is now the coastal area of Northern California. These books recount Intrepid's many rings as it grows from a small seed to a tall member of an old growth forest. In this book, Intrepid recounts how it got its start in the forest, some of the early challenges it experienced, and how the redwoods support each other. Artist and Author, Matt Harline has transcribed and illustrated Intrepid's account of its life.

Description

Many years ago Intrepid began life in the redwood forests of what is now the coastal area of Northern California. These books recount Intrepid's many rings as it grows from a small seed to a tall member of an old growth forest. In this book, Intrepid recounts how it got its start in the forest, starting with a forest fire that prepared the ground for a seed to grow. Intrepid starts from a small seed which emerges from the dirt. It grows and connects with other trees in the forest and makes friends with them. A storm comes to the forest, and one of the tallest trees is blown over. While the tree falls, a new tree comes from the roots of the fallen tree, and continues the life of that tree. Artist and Author, Matt Harline has transcribed and illustrated Intrepid's account of its life.

About The Author

Matt Harline has always been an artist, but spent much of his life working as an Electrical Engineer. In 2016 his life was turned upside down when he was in an accident while riding a bicycle. The traumatic brain injury he acquired in the accident prevented Matt from continuing his work as an engineer, so he turned to his love of art. In 2018 Matt took a trip to see the Schulman Grove of ancient great basin bristlecone pines near Big Pine, California. The trees were thousands of years old and looked half dead. But they were thriving in a harsh environment. Matt wanted to learn to thrive like all trees do. Drawing and painting images of trees became his passion. In 2025 Matt had the opportunity to be an Artist in Residence in the Redwoods National and State Parks, sponsored by the Redwood Parks Conservancy. He had been thinking about writing and illustrating a book on the life of a tree for some time. Spending 4 weeks among the redwoods provided the inspiration he needed to finally start that book dream. Matt lives and works in his art studio in Placerville, CA. Matt prefers to create art with ink, watercolor, and sometimes acrylic. His artwork can be seen on his web page: https://www.HuesOfTheWorld.com
