Description

The songs in this book are designed for preschool, primary, and early elementary grade learners. They were selected based primarily on requests from teachers and parents. We also considered rankings on iTunes, view counts from our YouTube channel, streaming statistics from music services such as Spotify and sales on the Songs for Teaching website. Each song is arranged in lead sheet format. This is a form of musical notation that specifies the essential elements of a song: the melody, lyrics, and harmony. The melody is written in music notation, the lyric is written as text below the staff, and the harmony is specified with chord symbols above the staff. You don't need to play an instrument to enjoy this book. You can sing without accompaniment, or sing along with the recordings. Also, each song is followed by a section with suggested activities – valuable for encouraging active participation. The songs appear in alphabetical order. The reader can view the song order in the table of contents at the beginning of the book. At the end of the book songs are listed by category such as Holidays, Math, Phonics, and Rhythms.

About the author

Hap Palmer pioneered the integration of music and movement
in the area of early childhood education. His songs enhance the development of motor skills, language acquisition, reading readiness, and math concepts as well as nurture the imaginative process and encourage creative problem solving. His widespread popularity in schools and day-care centers for over forty years has made him a living legend within the teaching community for young children. Teachers have used his music for more than two generations to teach letters, numbers, phonics, days of the week, colors, shapes and more. A third generation of children are now learning with his songs and movement innovations.

An accomplished musician, singer/songwriter and educator, his multiple skilled talents on guitar, bass, percussion, saxophone, flute and clarinet can be heard on his various recordings. Hap's recordings and videos have received numerous honors including the Parents' Choice Award, the American Library Association Notable Designation, the National Association of Parent Publications Award, The Early Childhood News Directors Choice Award, The Teachers Choice Award, and the American Video Award.

As a teacher of teachers, Hap has taught classes and workshops for the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the University of California at Los Angeles Education Extension, the
Los Angeles City Schools, the Georgia Preschool Association, the Oklahoma Early Childhood Association, the New England Kindergarten Conference, and many other school districts and educational organizations throughout the nation. Using his background in music, education, and dance, he is able to help teachers find innovative, imaginative and fun ways to teach their students with enjoyable music and lyrics that children love to listen to over and over again.
