Overview

Kennedy Maria Segars was an inquisitive young woman who was filled with ambition. Kennedy was born on May 14, 2000, which happened to be Mother’s Day. Quvada, her mom, knew from the start that this little girl was going to be a force to be reckoned with. As she grew, her mind expanded and absorbed everything around her. She was an honor student her entire school career, enjoyed traveling and seeing new places, and loved being in the presence of family and friends.

In high school, Kennedy pushed herself to meet and exceed her goals. She was a dual enrolled student at Decatur High School and DeVry University. Kennedy participated in the debutante program, while also being a cheer coach to the younger group of students and working at a pizza shop. She had received a full scholarship to Alabama State University to major in Political Science. Unfortunately, her beautiful start on her life journey ended in tragedy.

On October 13, 2018, which is her mother’s birthday, Kennedy was home from college visiting her family. She was minutes from her parents’ house, stopped at a red light, when an impaired driver going over 70 mph rear-ended her. Kennedy was rushed to the hospital, but the injuries were just too severe. She later died, surrounded by her loved ones.

Kennedy’s parents are left now to carry on the legacy of their extraordinary daughter. They created the Kennedy Maria Segars Foundation dedicated to inspiring young people of color to pursue their educational endeavors in an environment that promotes personal and academic excellence. Their goal is to pass along the tenacity and perseverance that Kennedy brought to the world and to other young people.

About the author
Quvada Moreland is a mother, advocate and business professional who is also a passionate crusader of opportunity through education. For most of her adult life, she has been particularly interested in propelling young people to reach their highest potential. This belief in young people and the passion for educational opportunities have laid the groundwork for the foundation's mission of cultivating future leaders, recognizing emerging talents, and inspiring young people to fulfill their dreams by obtaining a college education. Born in Belle Glade, Florida, Quvada moved to Atlanta, Georgia with her family when she was five-years-old. After graduating from the now-defunct Sequoyah High School, Quvada went on to attend and graduate from Bethune-Cookman University, where she earned Bachelor's degrees in both Accounting and Business Administration. She then went on to earn her Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. After the untimely passing of her beautiful daughter, Kennedy, in October 2018, Ms. Moreland knew that she had to honor her daughter's legacy while also incorporating the values and purpose that guided her life as both a parent and an advocate. Thus, the idea of the non-profit organization, the Kennedy Maria Segars (KMS) Foundation Inc., evolved in 2020. Through the KMS Foundation, Quvada plans to create a path for future success by providing college scholarships and leadership training. As the noted African-American children's activist Marian Wright Edelman once said, "The question is not whether we can afford to invest in every child; it is whether we can afford not to." Quvada knows that "we" cannot afford to not invest in the youth…and the Kennedy Maria Segars Foundation aims to show what can happen when opportunities through education are created!
