Kennedy Maria Segars was an inquisitive young woman who was filled with ambition. Kennedy was born on May 14, 2000, which happened to be Mother’s Day. Quvada, her mom, knew from the start that this little girl was going to be a force to be reckoned with. As she grew, her mind expanded and absorbed everything around her. She was an honor student her entire school career, enjoyed traveling and seeing new places, and loved being in the presence of family and friends.
In high school, Kennedy pushed herself to meet and exceed her goals. She was a dual enrolled student at Decatur High School and DeVry University. Kennedy participated in the debutante program, while also being a cheer coach to the younger group of students and working at a pizza shop. She had received a full scholarship to Alabama State University to major in Political Science. Unfortunately, her beautiful start on her life journey ended in tragedy.
On October 13, 2018, which is her mother’s birthday, Kennedy was home from college visiting her family. She was minutes from her parents’ house, stopped at a red light, when an impaired driver going over 70 mph rear-ended her. Kennedy was rushed to the hospital, but the injuries were just too severe. She later died, surrounded by her loved ones.
Kennedy’s parents are left now to carry on the legacy of their extraordinary daughter. They created the Kennedy Maria Segars Foundation dedicated to inspiring young people of color to pursue their educational endeavors in an environment that promotes personal and academic excellence. Their goal is to pass along the tenacity and perseverance that Kennedy brought to the world and to other young people.
