Deep Dive

Dorothy Myrick was the original scaredy-cat of open water. After learning to swim, it took falling off her bike to discover scuba diving. She has earned certifications in open water diving, boat specialty diving and perfect buoyancy diving. She enjoys diving in Jamaica, Grand Caymans, Turks and Cacaos and a local quarry in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She looks forward to future dives, as well as, taking swim classes at the local community college. She looks forward to inspiring others to beat the odds. Dorothy Myrick, author of the memoir Deep Dive Against the Odds was born with a condition of the left arm called radial hemimelia (a reduction in the radial bone of the forearm and the absence of a thumb and index finger). In her memoir, she recalls how she felt as a child growing up with this birth defect and how it produced an inner drive to never give up! She wrote about this amazing journey that changed her life along with the ups and downs along the way. Dorothy took a writing workshop and writing class at the community college. She is a member of the Black Writers' Guild of Maryland. She graduated with honors receiving a B.S. degree in Information Systems from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and a B.S. degree in Medical Technology from Lincoln University in Missouri. After graduating as a Medical Technologist, she began her career working in a hospital Blood Bank. After receiving the Information Systems degree, she worked for the Federal Government for 28 years as a policy writer. She was regularly published in Federal Registers for the Department of Health and Human Services. When she is not swimming, scuba diving and chasing deer away from her prized Hydrangea bushes, Dorothy enjoys reading mystery novels, baking cakes and falling off her bike (Not). She lives near Baltimore, Maryland with her husband James.
