Overview
The daunting Lord Montclaire is outraged when he returns from the crusades to discover that the scheming King Richard the Lionheart has bestowed his lands upon a young heiress. The astute Diana is not impressed either, realising the danger of her new inheritance, especially when the chivalrous and lethal Montclaire seeks her out and discovers he wants her – and not only for his estates. Can she trust him as the king's entourage are swept up in the pursuit of war against the French?
Description
England, God’s year 1194, soldiers are everywhere yet Diana’s impetuous brother takes the garrison to fight for King Richard the Lionheart at Nottingham. With the battlements undermanned, Lady Diana is horrified to discover her brother has claimed lands held in trust for Lord Montclaire as his own before being killed in battle, leaving her in possession of a dangerous inheritance. Barricaded in her own chapel against the attack of the mercenaries returning her brother’s body, her problems are not diminished by the arrival of Lord Montclaire, as yet unaware of his grievance. The entire court is swept to war as King Richard the Lionheart exacts a swift revenge against the French king, his mortal enemy. Under threat from the king’s mercenaries, the French enemy, and increasingly reliant upon Montclaire, Diana is propelled from one dangerous situation to another – both physically and emotionally. As the politics of the time are unveiled, so are the plots which swirl about the king, the master puppeteer. Meanwhile, Montclaire wants his lands and soon finds he wants Diana too, but isforced to wait upon the King’s pleasure. This book weaves the story of a little known part of Lionheart’s life and the lives of two of his subjects into a glorious tapestryof mediaeval life.
