About The Author

Alice Ina McMillan was born in Barberton, Ohio, in 1925. She earned a journalism degree from Boston University and later completed a Master's in English at UNC Charlotte. Alice enjoyed skiing and had a deep love of travel. In 1953, she set out alone on a three-month journey across Europe—an ambitious undertaking at a time when few women undertook such adventures, especially young women of limited means. Diminutively built, one of her fondest memories and a highlight of her travels came when she was hoisted by a London bobby to the top of a mailbox so she could photograph Queen Elizabeth II near Lambeth Bridge during the coronation festivities. She was married for 55 years to Dr. Thomas McMillan of Charlotte, with whom she raised two sons, Thomas and Peter. They later welcomed three grandchildren into the family. Alice worked for many years on this young adult novel but did not live to see it completed. She passed away in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2011. Her son Thomas, decided in 2024 to collect her papers, and with the help of a professional editor, fulfill her dream of having the novel published.
