Description
Boston, 1856. Northern abolitionists demand an end to slavery, while the South vows to protect its "peculiar institution." Immigrants, especially the Irish, rage against the prejudices of established citizens. Demands for equal treatment of women grow ever stronger. As the rumblings of discord rage, two people find themselves embroiled in the chaos of a rapidly changing world. Into this crucible of discontent sails Jack Moylan, the young director of a well-known and well-respected shipping company. Transferred to Boston to shore up the firm's flagging foundations, he also has designs on courting Guinevere Walker, the woman he has loved since his youth in California. However, Guine Walker is focused on becoming a physician. The budding doctor joins the fight for emancipation of both women and slaves, as she struggles with the rigid social norms of her native Boston and longs for the independence she enjoyed as a young girl on the West Coast. The third book in a four-part series, A Peculiar Peace continues the saga of Jack and Guine, begun with the California Gold Rush adventure Embracing the Elephant.
