Wild Sonnet #143
Of Odysseus I dream, not on the glinting
And silvered shores of Ilium, where among
The armored Greeks for nine long years
He battled in blood for a love that was
Not his own, nor of the island of his days
Where divinity and danger had unmade
So many of his men from shape to shade.
I dream instead of him upon the deck
And mute adventure of his boat,
Composing, in the epic of his mind,
The smell of bread, the warming nights beside
His wife, the sound of his son singing in the yard,
While searching on the sea for how the brave
Might outwit the wind, or be wiser than the wave.
