Lessons in Drawing From Ancient To Future was concieved from the perspective of a jazz teacher. It encourages drawing simply for the love of drawing. The essays in these Lessons will help the student to explore how to draw with the number two pencil like it is a musical instrument! It is a celebration of the pencil's simplicity in connection to the earliest forms of visual expression. Lessons is not a standard how to book, but a philosophy that is copiously illustrated with original art work and exercises in drawing. Lessons is especially directed at people of limited means or stability, or in difficult situations. Lessons is as much a book about how to see, as it is how to draw what you see. I believe that good music and fine drawing are born of the same thought. Drawing at a certain level of artistic accomplishment, and jazz music, are nurtured in the same womb, and they are drawn from the exact same well of freedom, strength, and virtuosity. Over the past four years I have been completely immersed in the writing of this book. It has been a sacrifice that has had me go days without food, but the only hunger I experienced was in my obsession about engaging this work. My entire being was focused on pushing this book to its extreme. Every page, every word, and every line of every drawing, was carefully considered as to its usefulness to the overall mission. In short, I have given this book my all. I don't see where I can do better than I have done. While some no doubt may disagree and argue that they could have done better, I can only take pride in the fact that I have given everything of myself and done my best. With that said, I will leave the rest to you the reader with the hope that somehow in some way my efforts will bear fruit. And that you somehow will gain a small appreciation for drawing with a pencil and the virtues of simplicity.
