Throughout her life, Regina Mullen, the author, struggled with Stargardt Disease, which causes significant visual impairment. This was instrumental in her career choice. She worked as a school psychologist in the public school system for fourteen years servicing children from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Temple University, as well as a Master's degree and an Educational Specialist's degree in School Psychology from Florida State University.
The book's illustrator, Mickey Bissell, has been painting ever since she can remember. She has studied fine art at Temple University in Philadelphia and also at Henry Ford College. Her strengths lie mainly in color and design and she is able to create intriguing paintings from life, memory, or from any favorite photograph. Her work is mostly in acrylics and watercolors on canvas and paper. Mickey has studios in Ambler, Pennsylvania and Sea Isle City, New Jersey.
