From entering the American school system, Kelly and her teachers noticed her difficulty with the lessons. At the age of 9, Kelly went with her mom to a specialized doctor who diagnosed her with specific learning disabilities and ADHD. Kelly worked with teachers and her school program leaders to fill the gap in how she learns and compares to how the curriculum was typically taught. These efforts of working together created equity in her access to Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), a protected right under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). After hard work and creative learning plans from her teachers, Kelly finished high school and got her bachelor’s degree in communication design. Kelly is considered a neurodivergent learner (she learns differently) and is passionate about seeing other neurodivergent learners and their families get the help they need.
