After graduating high school in New Jersey, Garry went to College in Vermont, there he found home.  After graduating college, Garry became an AmeriCorps (then called VISTA-Volunteers in Service to America) volunteer working for the Montana Human Rights Division.  In that role, he promoted Montana's new landmark anti discrimination law via media in all forms, conferences, presentation in all corners of the state.

After his stint was over, for several years, Garry became a Peace Corps/Vista Recruiter stationed in Atlanta, and  then Philadelphia.

While working on his Master's Degree Garry began working for the State of Vermont in various capacities until he resigned to work as the head of the field operations for Madeleine Kunin, a former Lt. Governor who was running for Governor.  In 1984 she won and became only the 4th woman in U.S. history to be elected as governor without succeeding her husband.

Garry worked as the Director of Public Information for the Governor for 4 years before moving into various roles in health care administration/policy. Eventually Garry was hired to work for the Vermont Department of Public Health on school aged health policy and issues. At the end of his career he was the Director of the Division of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention for the Department of Health.

In 2014 Garry was awarded the National American Academy of Pediatrics Child Health Advocate Award for his efforts to improve the lives of children in Vermont
