At the age of 13, the death of his father triggered a cascade of personal and family turmoil. After witnessing several unsuccessful suicide attempts by his mother, he suffered for years from depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. It was not until adulthood that Dr. Chapa realized that he had to make a choice: continue to just survive through life, or thrive in it. After applying his medical training and love of research to the subject of MINDSET, he was convinced that a positive, growth mindset was truly MIND MEDICINE directing personal and professional success.
Dr. Chapa has zeal for sharing his story and lessons learned on overcoming life’s challenges. It is his passion to share this as an encouragement for others. In 2019, he received the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism faculty award for his unique teaching style, dedication, and passion for medical education and professional development. In March 2020, he was selected as a TEDxTAMU speaker for his MIND MEDICINE platform. He has been an invited speaker in 13 countries due to his passion for teaching, and dedication to his research.
Dr. Chapa has been married to his wife, Lisa, for 20 years; they have 3 children.
