Overview
When Men Become Lions is a true-life crime account of Chief of Police Paul Szych's 30-plus-year career, during which he and his detectives mitigated more than 1,850 threats against women–displaying a domestic violence and/or stalking related nexus. Drawing on real cases, it reveals how domestic violence and stalking can escalate into workplace and mass violence. While active shooter training reduces harm, it remains reactive; true safety depends on early, proactive intervention. With practical insights into how to identify & avoid men likely to become violent—this book serves as a "blueprint" to recognize warning signs early, to prevent targeted violence before it begins.

When Men Become Lions is a powerful true-life crime story of how Chief Paul Szych stopped more than 1850 violent men from killing the women they were stalking. Chief Szych takes you through his 30-year journey in law enforcement, to teach you how to proactively avoid and protect against, domestic violence, stalking and workplace violence related killing events. This book is based on true events involving dangerous men who are willing to threaten, stalk, and potentially murder the women they are pursuing. Sadly, the workplace has become the new "Ground Zero" for mass-killing-events, many of which have a domestic violence and/or stalking related nexus that has "spilled over," into the workplace environment.
While active shooter training is an important mitigative layer to workplace safety, it accepts that an active shooter incident is already in progress, and lives are likely being lost. law enforcement will respond to such an event as fast as humanely possible, however, this response takes time. Time is the one thing that you do not have during an active shooter incident, if the goal is to have zero victim fatalities. The reality is that most active shooter incidents start and conclude prior to law enforcement making contact with the shooter, thus active shooter training is a "Stop-Gap" measure that seeks to limit the loss of life, while doing little to proactively prevent the first shot from being fired. Therefore, the "best practice" first step to workplace safety must include "Workplace Violence Avoidance," as described within Chapter 8 of this book.
The predatory nature of stalking is a foundational element of many killings in America. Most studies indicate that more than 85% of women who are murdered in the United States, are killed by the man who is stalking her. This reality is not a random act of violence. In fact, patterns of offender conduct leading up to the murder often show a pattern of unchecked aggression, threats to kill, and months of stalking leading uptown the murder.
Most The path to stopping the increasing threat of domestic violence, stalking, school, and workplace violence related homicide starts the moment you read this book!
