About the author
Bettye Thomas White is a sister, mother, wife, friend, sorority sister, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was born Betty Jean Thomas in Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia, on June 23, 1942. She was raised in the segregated south with parents who had a vision that all of their three children would be educated. She graduated from Pinevale High School in May of 1960, and she attended Savannah State College. After graduation, she began her teaching career in 1968 in Miami, Florida. She retired from the Miami Dade County Public School system in 2008 after 40 years of service. Loved by students and parents and acknowledged by her peers, the Mayor of the City of Miami Beach proclaimed December 2, 2006, "Bettye Young White Day." Additionally, the Mayor of the City of Valdosta, John Gayle, proclaimed June 24, 2017, "Bettye Thomas Young White Day," recognizing her contributions to shaping the next generation leaders.
