"The View From Above" captures the memorable and exhilarating experiences created when people from around the world, or just around the corner, hike the Sonoma Overlook trail. In part it's told in their own words and sketches, drawn from thousands of entries in Hikers Notebooks kept at the summit for visitors and regulars to express their impressions. Along the way, readers will learn the trail's history: how people came together 20 years ago to spare this beautiful natural site with stupendous views from private development, and then built a public trail for people of all ages to enjoy in perpetuity. This community spirit remains strong today, as volunteer stewards, in a unique relationship with the City of Sonoma, work daily to maintain the trail and its amenities, raising funds and work-in-kind from the community to do so.

About the author

Roy Tennant is an internationally recognized digital librarian, now retired. His last position was as a Senior Program Officer for OCLC Research, where he managed projects relating to technology, infrastructure, and standards. Previous employers included the California Digital Library and the University of California, Berkeley. His books included Crossing the Internet Threshold: An Instructional Handbook (1993), the first book written about the Internet for librarians, and one of the first dozen written for a non-technical audience. Roy wrote a monthly column on digital libraries for Library Journal for a decade, and a blog for years after that, and has written numerous articles in other professional journals. In retirement, he has published essays in the Boatman's Quarterly Review on whitewater rafting through the Grand Canyon. Roy is a commercial whitewater river guide, treehouse builder, (the fourth in his backyard in the Sonoma Valley), trail builder and maintainer, husband, and the father of grown twin daughters.
