The Tao of Jazz Improvisation
A Martial Arts Training Method for Jazz Improvisation
by Sheldon Zandboer

Overview

“The consciousness of self is the greatest hindrance to the proper execution of all physical action.”                                                                                        -Bruce Lee

There are thousands of subconscious calculations occurring continuously and instantaneously during every musical performance. For instance: time, tempo, feel, key, mood, etc. If we can automate or internalize the majority of the fundamental performance elements, they become less of a burden on the creativity of the player. The solution is to train yourself using Bruce Lee's methodology to react instinctively to your musical "environment".
