Overview

Deep within the wilderness of British Columbia, John and Marie Eagleton shroud a mysterious gift sculpted from ivory centuries ago. While John believes in the legend of this talisman, and is adamant that its presence never be revealed, Marie is far more skeptical and impulsive. Forsaking her Native American past to fund her sons' future college educations, Marie dares to negotiate its sale. But Marie's decision to divulge the talisman's existence to an outsider will ignite a series of tumultuous events. The family she is so intent on safeguarding will be thrust on a fateful journey.

Book Review:

“Set against the stunning backdrop of British Columbia, The Talisman is an unforgettable novel by R.L. Kasprzycki that explores the rich history and traditions of Native Americans in that region of North America. Centered around the Eagleton family and a priceless talisman from their mysterious cultural past, this is a story of familial belief, cultural evolution, respect for nature, love, loss, guilt and finding peace within a changing world.

When Marie seeks to sell a precious heirloom to help her son with his future, against her husband’s wishes, she could never have predicted the chaotic series of events that would unfold. The titular talisman sits at the center of this story like a classic MacGuffin, but it is also deeply symbolic of Native American culture. Its potential sale therefore becomes a complex and philosophical crisis that is fascinating to read and dissect.

The descriptive power of the author is perhaps the most notable element of the writing. Kasprzycki excels at weaving important concepts into seemingly simple moments, making this book feel heavy with import and meaning.

For anyone interested in the rich and often overlooked history of Native Americans in British Columbia, this is an unpredictable, insightful and thought-provoking novel clearly written from a place of love and respect for the past.” - Self-Publishing Review (SPR)

Description
Deep within the wilderness of British Columbia, John and Marie Eagleton shroud a mysterious gift sculpted from ivory centuries ago. While John believes in the legend of this talisman, and is adamant that its presence never be revealed, Marie is far more skeptical and impulsive. Forsaking her Native American past to fund her sons' future college educations, Marie dares to negotiate its sale. But Marie's decision to divulge the talisman's existence to an outsider will ignite a series of tumultuous events. The family she is so intent on safeguarding will be thrust on a fateful journey. What must they endure to survive? What will she forfeit? Can they find their way back? Although the talisman is an enigma, it is valuable enough to have been passed down through the ages. The carved images tell a story. The talisman is a link to the past, but is there meaning for today's world? The Talisman will appeal to those with Native American heritage or an interest in their cultures, to those who find the past intriguing, to those who enjoy a blend of mainstream and literary fiction, and to those who enjoy a story with a message.
About the author
Robert L. Kasprzycki was born in Connecticut and first showed an interest in art at an early age. Initially drawing cartoons, he expanded his interest to portraits, scenery and landscapes utilizing pastels, watercolors, then oils and acrylics. He built upon this talent and after graduating from Syracuse University with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design embarked upon a career as an industrial designer and manager, working in corporate designing innovative products in the manufacturing industry. There are several design patents and a mechanical patent to his credit. While an industrial designer, he also mentored others as an adjunct professor. After completing a Master of Science in Instructional Design, and a MBA, he worked in the training field designing courses, courseware, and curricula for a variety of organizations in higher education, corporations, and non-profits. He also served in the military as a United States Army Reserve Officer in the active reserves for over a decade, achieving the rank of Major. Upon retiring he started a fine art business, desiring to get back to his creative penchant and continues to complete works of art with acrylic, oil, and digital media. A college creative writing course sparked an interest in fiction writing, and he was inspired by Native Americans, their plight and their cultures, to write The Talisman. When he's not writing, drawing, or painting, he enjoys photography, tennis, traveling, and volunteer work.
