The Return of the Sons of Rome:

Faith, Civilization, and the Future of the Christian West

By Dominic Ita-Johnson

Overview

For nearly two thousand years, the civilization shaped by Rome has defined the moral, intellectual, and political framework of the West. From the Republic's transformation into empire, through Europe's Christianization, and into the modern age, Rome's heirs carried a vision of law, faith, and ordered liberty that helped form the modern world. Today, that same civilization faces a profound crisis of identity. Across Europe and the wider West, the spiritual foundations that once sustained cultural confidence and institutional vitality have eroded, leaving a secular order uncertain of its origins and unsure of its future. The Return of the Sons of Rome offers a sweeping historical and theological reflection on this pivotal moment. Drawing on classical sources, historical analysis, and Christian thought, Dominic Ita-Johnson argues that the West's future cannot be understood—or renewed—apart from its Christian foundations. This work calls the heirs of Rome to remember the faith that once gave their civilization strength and to consider anew the path of repentance, renewal, and responsibility before God. In a world now shared with vibrant Christian communities across Africa and the Americas, they are invited to recover their calling and once again carry the gospel to the ends of the earth.

Description

For nearly two millennia the civilization born from the Roman world has shaped the moral, intellectual, and institutional architecture of the West. From the transformation of the Roman Republic into empire, through the Christianization of Europe, and into the modern age, the heirs of Rome carried a civilizational inheritance that profoundly influenced global history. Yet the civilization once animated by Christian conviction now faces a profound crisis of identity. Across Europe and the wider Western world, the spiritual foundations that once sustained cultural confidence, moral and social cohesion, and institutional vitality have steadily eroded. In their place has arisen a secular order uncertain of its own origins, unsure of its future, and exploited by immigrant philosophies. The Return of the Sons of Rome offers a sweeping historical and theological reflection on this pivotal moment. Drawing upon classical sources, historical analysis, and theological insight, Dominic Ita-Johnson argues that Western civilization cannot be understood apart from its Christian foundations. This work calls the heirs of Rome—the nations shaped by its legacy—to remember the faith that once gave strength to their civilization, and to consider anew the path of repentance, renewal, and responsibility before God. In a world now shared with vibrant Christian communities across Africa and the Americas, they are invited to recover their calling and once again carry the gospel to the ends of the earth.
