Louella is taking her first bus ride to visit her grandmother, Bambi, by herself. She misses her stop and a youth on the bus helps her get off at the next stop and meet Bambi. After he helps them home, they notice something odd about his size, but are happy to start their visit together. Louella explores Bambi's work space, asking lots of questions about the many crocheted dolls, in many colors. Bambi explains why she makes so many of them and Louella starts taking inventory. They leave the house and when they return, Louella discovers the red dolls are missing. A plan is hatched to find them and the story unfolds as we discover who stole the dolls and why. From the childhood of a lonely girl and a boy with a single mom, the characters discover a new meaning of family.
