The Last Dinosaur

The Last Dinosaur is the story of young dinosaur waking up to a world he does not recognize. A long frozen block of ice cracks open in a cave in the North. First, he meets Arctic Fox, who has never seen anyone like him. Where are all the dinosaurs? Where is his mother? Dinosaur remembers the bedtime stories his mother told him about a place their ancestors used to live. It was a place of warmth. Could they be there?  

As Arctic Fox directs him to the warmer South, Dinosaur begins a long journey to answer his questions and find his family.  As he walks along and dreams at night, be begins to remember more of the stories his mother told him with more and more detail.  There was a great canyon, with red rocks on its walls and sunsets. It also had a long river running through it.  His journey takes him through Yellowstone, Yosemite and Grand Canyon National Parks, where he seeks the help of animals in finding his answers.    He speaks to Bison, Bear and Tortoise.  When Dinosaur reaches the Grand Canyon, Tortoise tells him about someone special, a Native American Elder, with a long memory of history.  Does Dinosaur ever find out what happened to the dinosaurs and his home and family?

This book is a sisters' collaboration, Mary Mahon's writing comes from her love of animals and storytelling. She has rescued and adopted many animals and volunteered with animal rescue groups in California and Georgia. Mary studied in the U.C.L.A. Extension Writers' Program.Her background is in psychology with a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Southern California. She also has an M.A. in Sociology in the area of social psychology from U.C.S.B. and additional doctoral credits in clinical psychology. In addition to writing, Mary enjoys nature, travel and photography. Mary is from Los Angeles and now lives in Roswell, Georgia.

​Laura Calhoun Mahon is a contemporary artist and former Montessori teacher, trained in dance, yoga and creative movement. She taught nursery school and underprivileged teens at the Curro Velho Art Foundation. Her artwork has continued to deepen into inquiries of the elements, their properties, through working with textiles, using brushwork, wax, pigmentation, dyes, fluid acrylics and now, digital media. Laura has created site specific interactive installations in Brazil and New York City.Laura now divides her time between New York City and Sunrise Lake, PA.
