About the author
Thomas Knauff is more than a writer; more than a flight instructor. He is one of the world’s best soaring pilots. He is the first person to fly 750 and 1,000 and 1,250 kilometer triangles in the United States, and the first pilot to fly a 1,000 kilometer flight in a two-place glider in the United States. Tom set world records for a Goal and Return flight of 1,647 kilometers, the world’s longest triangular flight of 1,362 kilometers, the World Free Distance record of 1,394 kilometers, and the first person to break the 200 kilometer per hour “barrier” with a 300 kilometer goal and return flight at 201.3 kph. He has also flown the second fastest 100 kilometer triangle in the world at 186 kph. Tom has set six world soaring records, and more than fifty US national records. He is one of the premier flight instructors in the world. He has written numerous articles for soaring magazines, authored several books, and conducts many seminars and clinics that have improved the professionalism of all glider flight instructors and pilots. His instructional innovations include the TLAR landing pattern teaching method. The FAA honored him as the Eastern Region Flight Instructor of the Year in 1997. The soaring community needs a standardized training program that will ensure a well-trained student. This alone will assure an improved safety record for our sport. Tom’s books have become a rallying point for conscientious instructors and students. Doris Grove Doris Grove is the first woman to fly 1,000 kilometers in a glider, holds three world records, is a respected glider flight instructor, and a member of the Soaring Hall of Fame.
