Pete Dubois was commuting to the office when he read the headline he couldn’t believe – Psychosis Outbreaks across the U.S. and Canada. A virus, driving people mad? Just a hoax? He learns the nightmare is real when roving bands of soldiers, somehow acting in perfect synchronicity, chase him through Boston’s streets, tearing the city apart. In desperation, Pete forms a hasty partnership with Jackie Sullivan, a salty old local, and his estranged daughter, Kelly. They learn the maddening affliction can spread to civilians and decide to desert the city before it consumes them, struggling to keep Kelly’s toddler twins safe. As they flee, heading to New Hampshire’s rural seclusion and the hope of safety, they stumble across a charming stranger, Victor, and his feckless companion, Roul. Victor melds into the group but triggers Pete’s suspicion - is he perhaps not as benevolent as he seems? Fighting for food, searching for shelter, learning that their fellow survivors can be more deadly than the crazed hordes of infected, Pete and company claw their way north and stumble across an ominous revelation – a virus didn’t cause the outbreak, but something more insidious, something deliberate, something encircling the globe and threatening man’s dominion over the earth – The Black Halo.
