Overview

Paummi's life at 35 had not turned out at all how she had imagined it. Instead of being a blissfully married mother of two, she lived with her toxic ex-girlfriend, worked two jobs, and was about to spend her spring break traveling with a group of middle-school students. At least the trip would take her to France, a country that she had fallen in love with as a teenager. Paummi had planned a lot of what happened that spring—the school trip, a change of jobs, and finally moving out of the house and away from her ex-girlfriend. What she hadn't planned was everything that actually ended up happening—falling in love with Jeanmi, the bus driver, making the decision to leave her life in America to start a new one in France, and moving not to Paris or Aix-en-Provence but to a village of seven hundred inhabitants high in the southern French Alps. From a broken statue in Nice through Provence and the Loire Valley to the charm the City of Lights and finally to the village of Saint Crépin, The American and the Bus Driver tells the story of Paummi and Jeanmi's chance encounter and destiny's role in creating an outcome that was completely different from the one that either of them expected.
