Ten Bumbling Chefs
Big blunders at the teppanyaki grill
by Kimberli Ball

Overview

Children love going to the teppanyaki grill (often called a "hibachi" grill in the U.S.) for family celebrations and to watch the chef toss food, juggle utensils, and build flaming creations. But visitors to THIS teppanyaki grill will observe a host of mishaps: dripping oil, spilled sauce, hurled shrimp, and a blazing onion volcano that sets off the fire suppression system and calls the fire department. The head chef, Jill, is very frustrated by the blunders of her bumbling junior chefs. Will any of them learn the skills necessary to give a great performance and prepare tasty Japanese cuisine for the restaurant's guests? Grab your hashi (chopsticks) and come along on this rhyming adventure to find out! Young children will love the book's rhyming, repeating verse but kids of all ages, and their parents, will enjoy the humorous illustrations of the over-the-top blunders of the chefs. This will be a fun read-together picture book, reminding families of their own exciting experiences at teppanyaki (hibachi) restaurants.

Many children ask to have their birthday dinners at teppanyaki (hibachi) restaurants where they can watch the Japanese chef give a show while preparing the meal. Though predictable, these shows never fail to entertain. What better gift to present to the birthday boy or girl than a copy of Ten Bumbling Chefs: Big blunders at the teppanyaki grill?

Ten Bumbling chefs An excellent book for the inclusion of diversity in children's literature. The rhymical pattern of words will entice the child to "join" in the reading of the book over and over. The illustrations add much humor to the story, which children will enjoy. Older children may understand the underlying message that life experiences will help in the growth of wisdom. Entertaining!! From beginning to end this is an entertaining sing songy book with rhymes and rhythms appeal to children. Being sent in Teppanyaki (Hibachi like), Grill it presents a humorous view of mistakes that might occur. The illustrations add to the enjoyment of this book. A new experience for many! Read more

Ten Bumbling Chefs Sharing this with my grown children was a happy trip down memory lane, as it brought us happily back to many family celebrations at our nearby Japanese restaurant! And, as a preschool teacher, this title is a welcome addition to our library. It celebrates the teppanyaki grill with authenticity, has multicultural and multi-generational characters woven throughout, and, among other things, introduces Japanese numerical characters. I look forward to reading this fun and rhythmic text with my classes as well as weaving new learning into storytimes. Read more

Ten Bumbling Chefs A cute sing songy book that mimics Ten Little Monkeys that will have kids giggling at the chefs at a restaurant where each of ten chefs makes blunders and mistakes. Your little chefs will also learn the difference between hibachi and teppanyaki grilling while also having the opportunity to learn to count to ten in Japanese. All’s good though because the book ends on a positive note which is a great way to end this cute book and kids will love joining in during a two line refrain. Enjoy! Read more
